Ruha Benjamin [More Info]
Professor of African American Studies
Princeton University
Ruha Benjamin is a professor of African American studies at Princeton University and author of People’s Science: Bodies and Rights on the Stem Cell Frontier (Stanford University Press). She has studied the social dimensions of science, technology, and medicine for over fifteen years and speaks widely on issues of innovation, equity, health, and justice in the U.S. and globally. She is also a Faculty Associate in the Center for Information Technology Policy; Program on History of Science; Center for Health and Wellbeing; Program on Gender and Sexuality Studies; Department of Sociology; and serves on the Executive Committees for the Program in Global Health and Health Policy and Center for Digital Humanities. Ruha is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the 2017 President's Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton. Her second book, Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code, examines the relationship between machine bias and systemic racism, analyzing specific cases of “discriminatory design” and offering tools for a socially-conscious approach to tech development. She is also the editor of Captivating Technology. Ruha received her PhD in Sociology from UC Berkeley, completed postdoctoral fellowships at UCLA’s Institute for Genetics and Society and Harvard University's Science, Technology, and Society Program, and has received grants and fellowships from the Institute for Advanced Study, American Council for Learned Societies, National Science Foundation, and California Institute for Regenerative Medicine among others. Her work is published in numerous journals including Science, Technology, and Human Values; Policy & Society; Ethnicity & Health; and the Annals of the American Academy of Social and Political Science and reported on in national and international news outlets including The Guardian, National Geographic, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, and Nature.

Rachel Krausman is the Senior Director for 211 at United Way Worldwide, the global headquarters for more than 1,800 United Ways. 211 is a vital service leveraged by millions of people across the United States and Canada to access help with things like housing, food, health care, mental health support and more. Rachel’s team works closely with 211 leaders across the country at more than 200 organizations to strengthen and grow the service’s availability and to increase public awareness about 211. Rachel leads strategic partnerships that benefit the 211 network, including those with Twilio, Lyft, DoorDash, and IBM. Most notably, Rachel’s team developed and launched Ride United, a United Way initiative that facilitates free rides and free meal deliveries for 211 clients in more than 30 cities across the U.S. and has been critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to joining United Way, Rachel lead youth disaster preparedness programs at American Red Cross, where her team scaled The Pillowcase Project to reach more than 500,000 children with vital disaster preparedness education and with generous support from The Walt Disney Company.

She is responsible for the development and design of strategies and programs for the United Way networks in the United States and internationally. She currently serves on the board of directors for several organizations including National Civic League, The Ms. Foundation for Women and Funders Together to End Homelessness. Ms. Lara holds a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from San Diego State University and a Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Lori Malcolm serves as the first Chief Culture Officer for United Way Worldwide where she is focused on building a high-performing culture across a network of more than 1800 local United Ways in more than 40 countries. As United Way fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community, Ms. Malcolm brings her expertise in systems, strategy and excellence at an important time in the organizations history. Working with a diverse staff across the worldwide network, she is playing a critical role in connecting culture with the networks transformation to a business model focused on engaging individuals, while leaping forward in digital strategy. Her responsibilities encompass the organizations People functions including Recruiting, Talent Development, Learning & Conferencing, Human Resources, and Operations Excellence.

Prior to joining United Way Worldwide, Ms. Malcolm held senior roles for industry-leading organizations known for their strong cultures of performance and execution. Ms. Malcolm led Recruitment Marketing and Diversity Recruiting at Walt Disney World, IT Recruitment and Organizational Effectiveness at Walmart, and served as the SVP Human Resources and Talent at the franchised concept, Checkers and Rallys Restaurants. She brings a systems approach to her work that builds upon her engineering background, including 10 years developing and selling technology solutions with IBM, Corp.

Lori earned a Bachelor of Science in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University and has served on numerous nonprofit boards and industry associations focused on her passion to help others live better, healthier lives. She and her husband, Phil, reside in Tampa, FL and have four children between the ages of 21 and 28 who live in Japan, New York, Los Angeles and Miami.

Suzanne McCormick was named U.S. President of United Way Worldwide (UWW) in June 2019. She is responsible for helping the 1,100 local United Ways across the U.S. trailblaze in the philanthropic space to build more resilient, inclusive and sustainable communities. That includes leading in equity, tackling community problems with innovative and systemic solutions, and driving the ongoing digital transformation. Suzanne came to UWW from Tampa, Florida, where she spent five years as President and Chief Executive Officer for United Way Suncoast, one of Florida’s largest United Ways. In that time, she cultivated growth, increased community impact and led a strategic plan to break the cycle of generational poverty. Having previously served as the former chair of the United Way Network Partnership Group and National Professional Council, she will continue to enable the teams to develop and leverage powerful philanthropy initiatives, such as Salesforce Philanthropy Cloud. She brings invaluable insights as immediate past chair of the United Ways of Florida that will lend to the ongoing collaboration with United Way State Associations. Suzanne began her nonprofit leadership career at the International Center of New York and then as CEO for both the American Red Cross of Southern Maine and People’s Regional Opportunity. She joined the United Way of Greater Portland in Maine, where she provided 13 years of leadership, including four as President and CEO. Suzanne holds a B.A. in Political Science from Duke University and is an alumna of the Peace Corps, where she taught English in Thailand. She is the proud mother of two children: Jack, who serves in the U.S Army, and Fiona. Her husband of 25 years, Bill, is a physical therapist. Mark has been with United Way for over twenty years. In 2015, the Atlanta Business Chronicle awarded Mark with the CFO of the Year award in the non-profit category and during this same year, Mark was also named CFO of the year for the United Way network. Mark received his Bachelor’s Degree of Accountancy from The George Washington University and is a member of the AICPA and Virginia Society of CPAs. Mark is also Six Sigma Green Belt Certified. He and his wife Terri reside in Alexandria and recently celebrated 30 years of marriage.

Deirdre comes from United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, where she served as the Director of Corporate Partnerships, providing leadership in executing engagement plans with the top 100 corporate accounts, including organizational/Board reporting on Campaign results, data standards and training. Deirdre has also worked for FrontStream (formerly Truist) and has subject matter expertise in campaign management and processing systems widely used across the United Way Network. Lynn Auffart grew up in Southern Indiana on a small farm, and attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana where she received her degree in accounting. She began her career with a small CPA firm and from there went into manufacturing where she oversaw safety, IT, and accounting departments. The majority of her manufacturing experience was as a Controller in the petroleum industry. From there she moved into the non-profit healthcare sector overseeing finance and IT. My career at Fannie started on the operations side from working with mortgage lenders on mortgage pools, reconciling monthly disbursements, providing mortgage loan compliance, and during foreclosure prevention events working with consumers to be better educated on their mortgages. I enjoy helping people which led me to pursue a career in HR and training. I moved to HR and began working in compensation which gave me an opportunity to use my financial knowledge along with partnering with multiple Business units on HR matters, then to Diversity and finally to Facilitating & Training where I led new employee training and participated in executive and diversity training. Lucy is the VP of Technology & Operations for United Way of Central Indiana. After receiving a Chemical Engineering degree from Purdue University, she began her career working in the utility industry. She started in Quality Assurance at a nuclear power plant and then moved into regulation and operations for natural gas. After 14 years she decided to transition to “something more meaningful”. She began her UW career as a loaned executive in 1997. Lucy worked in Fundraising at UWCI for 15 years. As Director of the annual campaign she saw the fundraising results grow from $36m to $41m. In 2013, after working closely with Finance and leading an internal technology advisory team for many years, she was invited to move to a leadership role in Operations and oversee Technology for the organization. In 2017, she was recognized as an honoree for CTO of the Year award. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for Indiana United Ways, a statewide association, and leads the Technology Engagement Core Group for the UW network.

With 36 years of experience within our United Way Network, John Emge currently serves as Northeast Engagement Director for UWW. He is responsible for driving key performance metrics at both network and local Market levels in the region, including progress on growth of donors, volunteers, and advocates – all toward a Modern UW. Immediately prior to his start at UWW, John headed up his own consulting firm, Trusted Path Consulting, working exclusively with non-profits, including local UWs, consulting on structure, strategy, leadership, and development. From 2012 to 2018 John was VP & Regional Exec. Dir. at UW of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, leading their relationships with local communities in the PA & NJ suburbs of Philadelphia, and he played an integral role in the 2012 merger of seven local UWs that created UWGPSNJ, serving as co-chair of the Design Team.
